Our very own Outstanding Islander!

bhatariInternational student Vasha Bhatari has immersed herself in diverse multicultural experiences and built lasting friendships with others from around the world while at the Island University. The native of Jakarta, Indonesia, who learned English at age 6, grew up in the country’s largest city and capital, where, in 2008, she was an assistant teacher of an advanced journalism course at the International Language Program English School. Starting the ESLI program in fall 2009, it wasn’t long before the finance major earned her place on the Dean’s List and became a co-founder of the International Student Organization. Bhatari serves as treasurer for the organization, which continues to flourish. She has led the organization’s recruitment efforts and designs all logos and brochures. Bhatari, who is a student worker in the periodicals department of the Mary and Jeff Bell Library, first heard about Texas A&M-Corpus Christi through a friend from high school who enrolled at the University and shared wonderful stories about its programs. In her time here Bhatari has danced on the Performing Arts Center stage and assisted backstage for past Parade of Nations showcases. In 2011, she worked closely with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia to help bring their performers to this year’s show sponsored by the Office of International Education. Recently, Bhatari was selected by Student Affairs as one of 10 recipients to receive the 2011-2012 Leadership Scholarship. Her recent volunteer efforts include participating in Relay for Life on the Cancer Slayerz team, a clothing drive for Bokenkamp Children’s Shelter and the 24th annual Goodwill Spring Sun Run and Walk. She was voted on the Student Government Association as the international student representative and belongs to the Honors Student Association, Islander Student Finance Association, and the Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity, where she serves as historian and Webmaster. Her other hobbies include photography, music and traveling. After graduation, Bhatari plans to assist struggling families with their finances either in the United States or abroad. She has an older sister living in Singapore and a younger sister back home.
